CoSi Scenario Framework
Scenario Loop
CoSi is responsible for coordinating three scenario assessment loops between 2025 and 2032. Building on the experience with the original CROSS scenario comparisons and aiming to provide an open framework for different research teams to join and participate, the CoSi assessments are divided into two phases: the first phase are the CROSS scenarios covering the aggregated, national energy system development providing the big picture; the second phase are the CoSi Deep Dives addressing sub-topics, regional, cantonal or local dimensions, and other follow-up question will be addressed. After each loop the results and insight will be taken up for the following Scenario loop. A basic overview on the current scenario process is providing in this working document: CoSi Scenarios Vision.
The CROSS phase aims to provide the starting point for the overall scenario assessment by focusing on the long-term national development. It builds upon the previous model comparisons utilizing energy system models. For each loop CoSi will provide guiding questions for the respective scenario runs.
Further details on the CROSS runs are provided here.
The Deep Dives build upon the CROSS results as well as the related guiding question. They provide opportunity for utilizing diverse research approaches from different disciplines to tackle sub-topics and follow-up questions.
Further details on the Deep Dives are provided here.
Q&A
How can I participate in a CROSS or Deep Dive run?
If you are interested to join please contact the SWEET management office either via info@sweet-cosi.ch or hannes.weigt@unibas.ch. If you want to directly join a specific CROSS run you can also contact Adriana Marcucci (adriana.marcucci@esc.ethz.ch)
Who can participate in CROSS/Deep Dives?
Any research team interested to conduct investigations either utilizing the provided data of CROSS Hub or in line with the guiding research questions of the different CoSi loops is welcomed to join the CoSi scenario framework. In particular the Deep Dives are designed as open as possible to allow a wide variety of different disciplines with different methods to participate. The CROSS runs are for now still heavily focused on energy (system) models and participating in a CROSS-scenario run would require a usable model. Ex-post and ex-ante assessment of such model or scenario-based structures are part of the Deep Dives.
Does CoSi provide resources for participation?
Unfortunately, CoSi does not have funding for financing specific model runs or deep dives. We provide the infrastructure for data exchange (via CROSS Hub), overarching scenario questions, general exchange between research teams via our workshops and via the WeDoEnergy platform, and manage and support an overarching communication and outreach strategy.
Why should I join the CoSi Scenario framework?
Even if we can’t provide direct funding, the CROSS exchange structure, the CoSi community, and the CoSi communication structures help to enhance the visibility of your research, provide ample opportunities for productive exchange with researches in your field, and provide a bridge to researchers from other disciplines.
Does CoSi take over my research results if I participate?
By joining the CoSi scenario framework you ideally integrate into the data exchange structure (if you conduct model or data-based research) via CROSS Hub or provide your results via paper or report texts, enabling other researchers to utilize your results for follow-up research and enhancing the visibility of your research. CoSi will also provide a general result overview and insights derived from the different CROSS and Deep Dive results. In both cases your results remain clearly identified as your research output and follow the scientific citation rules. You are free to publish and use your own research results as you see fit. CoSi simply builds upon those and integrates them into a bigger picture; i.e. like in a review paper.
